A rotary phase converter – looking into one
A rotary phase converter is a simple workhorse that many modern construction and manufacturing enterprises could not work without. Essentially it is a static converter with a running motor attached. A static converter is relay which is sensitive to voltage and a capacitor. These two are hooked up to the motor you want to run. When it is running the relay will disconnect the capacitor and the engine runs on single-phase current. Of themselves, these cheap machines are poor performers. But when they are linked to an idling motor you get some significant improvements in capacity and output. Simply by adding the failings of the motor static converter are largely overcome and the amount of work the engine can do is extended.
