Why It’s Hard To Lose The Last 5 Pounds Of Fat

The longer you diet and the leaner you get, the harder it usually is to get to the next level. When those two factors come together, caloric restriction and low body fat, your body’s not going to want to give up that remaining bit of fat and it actually gets easier for your body to give up muscle. So what happens is your fat loss slows down or you experience what commonly called a plateau. This gets people really frustrated because sometimes it seems like you’re pushing harder and getting less results. I think the way to get over this is to first to expect it, and second to understand it. If you  understand the physiology behind it, then you can take steps to prevent it from happening.

There are several reasons for the plateau:  First = people don’t adjust their caloric intake properly as they get leaner. Energy balance is dynamic. That means that the amount of calories you need to burn fat today may not be the same as it will be in the future. As your body gets smaller and as you lose weight, you don’t need as many calories for that smaller body. A bigger person needs more calories and smaller person needs fewer calories just for basal metabolic rate. You also don’t need as many calories to move a small body.
